Florida first string running back Matt Jones is out indefinitely with a viral infection, GatorZone.com senior writer Scott Carter reported via Twitter.

Jones appeared to be the most likely candidate to take over primary rushing duties from Mike Gillisle, the Gators’ leading ball carrier in 2012.

As the No. 2 back in 2012, Jones rushed 52 times for 275 yards. He did his best work at the end of the season, scoring two of his three touchdowns in the regular season finale against Florida State, and Sugar Bowl vs. Louisville.

The severity of Jones’ infection will obviously determine the long-term running back situation. UF opens the season on Aug. 31 against Toledo, nearly a month from today.

But should Matt Jones be on the shelf for several weeks, his absence opens the door for true freshman Kelvin Taylor. The ballyhooed recruit and son of former Gator great Fred Taylor had an outstanding spring game.

Taylor will compete with fourth-year veteran Mack Brown, UF’s No. 3 ball carrier in 2012. Brown carried 102 times, but averaged a pedestrian 4.1 yards per carry and never reached the end zone.

Earlier this week, Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel had an emergency appendectomy. Driskel’s procedure will not impact his status for the season opener.
