Virginia Comes Back To Upset Louisville

While rival school Virginia Tech suffered an upset loss at home, Virginia pulled off an upset of their own.

Ian Frye hit a 42 yard field goal with 3:42 left in the game to knock of 21st ranked Louisville. It was Louisville’s first road game as a member of the ACC.

Virginia had initially built a 20-7 lead through three quarters thanks to a pair of Frye field goals, and Miles Gooch 15 yard touchdown reception, and a Greyson Lambert 10 yard touchdown run. And after allowing an opening drive touchdown to Louisville to start the game, the Virginia defense held Louisville to just 90 total yards of offense through the next 11 Cardinal possessions.

  • Eventually Louisville got things going in the fourth quarter. Touchdown runs from Dominique Brown and James Quick pulled the Cardinals up to a 21-20 lead with 6:59 remaining in the game. Things would take a disastrous turn on special teams two minutes later.

After forcing a Virginia punt, James Quick fumbled the return and gave the ball back to Virginia on Louisville’s  25. Three plays later Frye kicked his go-ahead field goal.

Louisville would see the ball one more time but would lose the ball on downs without obtaining a first down on the drive. Virginia was able to run out the clock from there.

Virginia was only a two win team a season ago but they’ve had strong performances against UCLA and now Louisville. A win over BYU next week on the road and people may have to start rethinking the expectations for Virginia this season.
