Would Dan Mullen Leave Mississippi State?

facebooktwitterreddit

Mississippi State and Dan Mullen have agreed to a contract extension through 2018, according to reports on the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.

This is obviously great news for the Bulldogs, but it opens up another question. Is there any chance that Dan Mullen would leave Mississippi State any time in the near future?

It’s not a great time to reign on the parade, but the likelihood of the Bulldogs having the same type of season they had last year is not high with so many starters gone, even if Dak Prescott is back.

And Mullen is never going to be able to recruit to the level that he would like at Mississippi State to be able to reload. This is not LSU, Alabama, or Auburn, and it really isn’t even Texas A&M.

  • Mississippi State is a decent job that you can win at, but there is a huge problem for the Mississippi schools: they are stuck in the deep SEC West and have to fight each other for the same elite in-state recruits. It’s not as much of a problem for the Alabama schools, which border Florida, a much bigger state.

But the Mississippi schools will be hard to win at consistently because, while there is lots of talent there, the population isn’t big enough and they split the elite recruits that stay in-state.

Maroon and White Nation touched on this last week with a great article about how the state of Mississippi made a huge mistake in 1848 and would have been better off with just one major state university.

This is a reality that will stick with Mullen, and years like 2014 will likely only come once in a blue-moon, but they won’t be consistent. And by the way, that is a year that included no division, conference, or national title.

So Mississippi State is right to do everything it can to keep Mullen around as long as possible.

But it does not mean he will stay.
