South Carolina’s attempt to rebound from an abysmal 7-6 campaign continues in Saturdays Garnet and Black Game.

It could be now or never for South Carolina.

In many ways South Carolina’s football program owes everything to head coach Steve Spurrier, but he isn’t getting any younger. South Carolina’s disappointing 7-6 finish was the worst season the Gamecock’s have had under Spurrier since the team finished with the same record in 2009.

That record will likely be on the players’ minds when they take the field on Saturday for South Carolina’s annual Garnet and Black Game.

Spurrier was often visibly frustrated with his team last year. Sometimes so much so that rumors began swirling that he might hang up his visor and retire.

He seems to enjoy coaching now, but if South Carolina continues to disappoint then it’s possible Spurrier could decide to resign and focus on his golf game. Luckily for the Gamecocks nothing makes the almost 70-year old forget his age like winning.

That’s why the upcoming season is so important for South Carolina. A strong spring game could be the spark the Gamecocks need to get back to their winning ways.

There will be plenty of unfamiliar faces taking prominent roles in this year’s game, and South Carolina fans who plan on attending the game might want to bring a roster with them. The quarterback competition will likely take center stage, but there are plenty of other holes on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball that should be worth watching.
