The Bears’ secondary took a major hit when 2016 four-star safety Marquel Dismuke decommitted from California.

The California Golden Bears have taken another hit at the safety position. 2016 four-star safety Marquel Dismuke (Carson, Calif. /Calabasas) has decommitted from the program.

Dismuke was ranked the No. 236 overall player in his class, the No. 10 safety in his class, and the No. 36 overall player in the state of California per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

He committed to the program back on February 26 and was very active following his commitment. He attended Texas A&M’s Junior Day on March 6, and unofficially visited the Arizona Wildcats on March 23. On May 22, he was offered by Nebraska as defensive coordinator Mark Banker did the honors, ending what was a whirlwind of visits for Dismuke.

With this decommitment, the Bears’ 2016 recruiting class no longer carries any four-star commitments. Currently, the program’s ’16 class ranks No. 45 in the country and No. 6 in the Pac-12 per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. This is the second four-star safety decommitment in less than two weeks as four-star safety Shurod Thompson (Brentwood Calif./Liberty) did so back on June 2.

Currently, the Bears have 11 safeties on their 2015 roster, with the lone senior from the group being Stefan McClure (Vista Calif./Vista High School.) However, looking at this from strictly a talent perspective, losing Dismuke is a blow to the Bear secondary. Looking over the class, I thought Dismuke was one of the “staple recruits”, one that could anchor the class and make a key contribution in the ’16 campaign. Now, the program will enter 2015 with a different recruiting mindset, as they will have to fill the holes left by the two departures.

As in life, there are good days and bad days when recruiting. The Bears will need to bounce back and work on limiting the damage of the two decommitments.
