Texas A&M open to playing both Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray?

Texas A&M has recruited two five-star quarterbacks in the last two years but is it possible both will play meaningful reps this year for the Aggies?

The Texas A&M Aggies haven’t had too many problems at quarterback since Kevin Sumlin was named the head coach and they moved from the Big 12 to the SEC.

Johnny Manziel won a Heisman and was a finalist another year and Kenny Hill set program records for single-game passing before he was unseated by last year’s No. 1 quarterback Kyle Allen.

The success on the field has translated to success off as the Aggies reeled in five-star dual-threat quarterback Kyler Murray to add to the riches they have at the position.

Allen finished as the starter as a true freshman but he finds himself in a competition with the Gatorade National Player of the Year, but is it possible both of them see meaningful reps this year?

Sumlin addressed that question on Tuesday at SEC Media Days, via Dallas Morning News’ Kate Hairopoulos:

"“I really haven’t done it before. We’ll see. We’ve never started out that way. That doesn’t mean that we won’t. We’ll see where we are in fall. Kyle is confident right now and should be. …Kyler is a guy who all he’s done is won. It’s like anything else. It’s not like Kyler didn’t know Kyle Allen was the MVP of the bowl game. That didn’t stop him. He’s coming to compete, and that’s what makes both of those guys who they are. Kyle is the same way. He committed before Johnny’s [Manziel] junior year. He didn’t know what was going to happen. Those guys aren’t going to back down from each other. That’s going to make us a better football team. We’ll make a decision.”"

After a dismal first start, Allen completed 65 percent of his passes, threw 12 touchdowns to four interceptions and added one rushing score in the final four starts of his rookie year.

Allen is undoubtedly the favorite to win the position with a year of experience and five starts under his belt while Murray has yet to take part in his first collegiate practice yet. But perhaps we see a package of plays for Murray to play in a reserve role just like Allen did when Hill was still the starter.

I think Sumlin would prefer Murray not be forced to play and allow him to grow and mature physically and mentally before throwing him into the fire.

But Murray is poised beyond his years and will do his best to keep both of his talented signal-callers happy, so expect some sort of time share with Allen getting the majority of reps with Murray getting a chance to show what he’s capable of doing.

Sumlin would call this a good problem.
