In our series counting down until the 2015 college football kickoff, we’ve tied the number of days to jersey numbers, years, and records. The latter is the subject of day 14, relating to the 14 interceptions hauled in by Al Worley for the Washington Huskies in 1968, and Gerod Holliman for the Louisville Cardinals in 2014, both single-season records.

An interception can be the product of a number of things, from a quarterback mistake, a receiver running a bad route, or sometimes just a savvy defensive back who reads the play perfectly.

Both Washington’s Al Worley and Louisville’s Gerod Holliman found themselves to be beneficiaries of some or all of those factors in their respective record-setting years, and helped make their defenses some of the best in the nation.

In 1968, Worley was captain of the struggling Huskies, and despite a 3-5-2 record on the season, the Washington defense wasn’t to blame for most of the losses with only a 17.7 points against average. Worley picked off opposing quarterbacks 14 times in just a 10-game season on his way to a first team All-American selection.

Worley’s record was tied in 2014 by Holliman, who needed 12 games (including a bowl appearance) to tie the long-standing record. The Cardinals defense was somewhat reborn in 2014 under first year DC Todd Grantham, and Holliman was the focal point of the improvement.

While both technically hold the record, the nod is given to Worley for a season containing two less games.
