Three months after transferring from Notre Dame, Everett Golson has been named the starting quarterback for the Florida State Seminoles.

Florida State made the announcement following their press conference earlier in the day. During the conference, head coach Jimbo Fisher didn’t release who was going to start to the public, but he did say that he was close to announcing who it was going to be.

He had indicated that they knew where they who they were going with the position and was going to release the info to the public as soon as he had talked to the quarterbacks and the team. Golson, who’s a fifth-year senior, was competing for the starting spot with redshirt junior Sean Maguire for the majority of the summer. Maguire only started one game in his career when he led the Noles past Clemson last season in a 23-17 overtime win when Jameis Winston was suspended.

Golson, however, has a lengthy resume with the Fighting Irish. He led Notre Dame to an undefeated regular season in 2012, bringing the Irish to the National Championship as a redshirt freshmen. That following May, he would get suspended due to academic violations and was forced to sit out the entire 2013 season. He came back in 2014 to throw for 3,445 passing yards on 256 completions with 29 touchdowns, but lost his starting job at Notre Dame due to his propensity to turn the ball over.

Fisher had constantly reiterated throughout the summer that the race between the two quarterbacks had been close, but it’s honestly not much of a surprise Golson landed the job.

And while Maguire certainly isn’t a bad quarterback, Golson has a lot more experience that includes playing in a national championship. It’s also Golson’s last year of eligibility. While its hard to say if Golson will be as good as the quarterback he’s replacing in Winston, he was a pretty clear choice for starter.
