Seth Russell looks like the next superstar quarterback from Baylor after throwing for five TD’s in the Bears win against SMU.

The first pass Seth Russell threw went for 42 yards to Corey Coleman. Four plays and 50 seconds later the Baylor Bears were in the end zone for the first time this year. Russell made his second career start and completed 15-of-30 passes for 376 yards, five TD’s and one INT after leading Baylor to a 49-21 lead in the before leaving in the fourth quarter. He also ran six times for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Russell picked up right where Bryce Petty left off and looks to continue the succession of prolific quarterbacks in Art Briles’ system in Waco. Robert Griffin III started it, won a Heisman and brought Baylor out of the cellar. Andrew Florence bridged the gap nicely between RG3 and Petty and now Russell gets his turn to put up Heisman-caliber numbers.

With Coleman and sophomore KD Cannon, no other team has a better pair of receivers than the Bears explosive duo. Kannon finished with three catches for 104 yards and a 56-yard touchdown. He’s arguably the best deep threat in the nation. Coleman finished with five catches for 178 yards and a 60-yard touchdown. And look out for Jay Lee to have a breakout season after catching having three catches for 70 yards and three touchdowns.

Baylor finished with 722 yards of offense and 56 points after five-star recruit Jarrett Stidham came in and threw a 47-yard TD so in a few years when Russell is in the NFL it looks like Baylor already has their next prodigy.

Not many teams can lose a player like Petty who finished in the top-10 in the Heisman the last two years in a row and upgrade at the position but with a few more performances like what we saw in the opener and that could be a reality.

So could a Heisman Trophy and a Big 12 Championship.
