The Boston College Eagles lose starting running back Jon Hilliman to a foot injury as the run game is left to search for answers on a banged up roster.

Boston College running back Jon Hilliman will be out for an undetermined amount of time due to a foot injury.

The sophomore starter broke his foot during Saturday’s matchup against Northern Illinois. The game was his best of the season after a slow start. Taking the Eagles running game on his back, he rushing for 119 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries, giving the Eagles the extra points they needed to push past NIU.

For the Eagles, this is a particularly devastating loss. The Eagles currently have the third best running offense in the ACC. Hilliman was named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award for College Football’s Player of the Year in the preseason and was starting to return to form.

Even worse is that two backup running backs, Myles Willis and Marcus Outlow, both suffered shoulders injuries during the game as well, and Hilliman had picked up the slack. Boston College lost a massive part of their rushing unit in one game, although Outlow is possible to return for next Saturday’s match against Duke.

With three backs out, Boston College is left with junior Tyler Rouse, who has 160 rushing yards and five touchdowns. While Rouse definitely has experience, losing this much talent will definitely hit the Boston College offense hard. The Eagles have the worst passing game in the ACC, and have relied heavily on its run game.

These losses will take a serious toll on the offense and expect the defense to have to play even better than they have already this year if Boston College is to make it to a bowl game.
