Heisman Odds: Alabama’s Derrick Henry the overwhelming favorite

The latest Heisman odds are out and Alabama Crimson Tide running back Derrick Henry is the overwhelming favorite to capture the Trophy.

With back-to-back 200-yard games and three such performances in the last four games, Alabama running back Derrick Henry has officially overtaken LSU Tigers running back Leonard Fournette as the front-runner to win the Heisman Trophy.

And Las Vegas has taken notice making Henry the betting favorite with 2/3 odds to win the Trophy that will be awarded at the Downtown Athletic Club on Dec. 12.

Henry is second in the nation in rushing with 1,458 yards, trailing Fournette by 16 yards, and leads the nation with 19 rushing touchdowns.

Fournette isn’t even the clear-cut No. 2 betting favorite after a second straight game below 100 yards and is tied with Ohio State Buckeyes running back Ezekiel Elliott with 9/2 odds. Fournette leads the nation in rushing with his 1,474 yards and is tied for second with 17 touchdowns. Elliott is third with 1,425 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Normally the Heisman is reserved for quarterbacks but we have to go four deep before getting to Clemson Tigers signal-caller Deshaun Watson who is getting 7/1 odds for being the best player on the No. 1 team in the country.

More from Saturday Blitz

Behind Watson, is Baylor Bears wide receiver Corey Coleman who has the Biletnikoff Award locked up but with receivers getting next to little love from Heisman voters and his 25/1 odds are proof even a receiver with 20 touchdowns through nine games won’t win the Trophy.

Stanford running back/return man Christian McCaffrey rounds out the list with 50/1 odds.

Of note is TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin who shared the honor with Elliott as being the preseason Heisman favorite, but a loss two weeks ago and an injured ankle suffered on Saturday all but ends his Heisman bid.

The biggest omission from this list is Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield who isn’t even listed. Mayfield ranks third in completion percentage (70.2), fourth in touchdowns (31), second in yards/attempt (10.0) and passer rating (183.88) and only has five interceptions on 309 attempts. He’s also added 301 yards and six rushing scores and ranks among the leaders in our latest Heisman rankings, so we’re believers in the OU quarterback.

Look for Mayfield to climb into the Heisman odds in the coming weeks if he can lead the Sooners to wins over TCU and Oklahoma State.
