Updated Heisman odds for the 2016 college football season sees two of last year’s finalists vying for the honor of betting favorite.

It may only be the early part of June but it’s never too early to start looking ahead to the fall for the college football season and which players will be standing out above their competition.

The Heisman Trophy may be the most prestigious individual honor in sports, outside of an Olympic gold medal, there’s no individual honor for outstanding achievement in the field of athletics I’d rather win than the Heisman.

Last year’s Heisman winner, Derrick Henry is now with the Tennessee Titans and trying to lock down a starting job so Archie Griffin’s distinction as the only two-time Heisman winner is safe.

However, two of last year’s Heisman finalists return for another chance at the Trophy with Clemson Tigers quarterback Deshaun Watson and Stanford Cardinal all-purpose back Christian McCaffrey. It was McCaffrey who finished ahead of Watson to finish as the runner-up last year but it’s Watson who bests McCaffrey now for the betting favorite in June.

According to Las Vegas SuperBook, Watson has the best Heisman odds at 9-2 while McCaffrey is tied for second with LSU Tigers running back Leonard Fournette at 5-1.

Then, it’s Florida State Seminoles running back Dalvin Cook and Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield receiving 10-1 odds to round out the top five Heisman contenders.

Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback and Georgia Bulldogs running back Nick Chubb were near the top of Heisman odds last year at this time but both are looking for bounce back years. They both are getting 15-1 odds as Barrett is the unquestioned full-time starter and Chubb is recovering from a surgically repaired knee. I’d feel more comfortable betting on Barrett in June than I do Chubb and his uncertain status for the beginning of the season but I’m hopeful Chubb can return to his pre-injury form.

Rounding out the top 10 on the updated Heisman odds are Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback DeShone Kizer, Oklahoma Sooners running back Samaje Perine and UCLA Bruins quarterback Josh Rosen at 20-1.

It is only June and there will be more players who emerge as legit Heisman contenders so if your favorite team’s player isn’t in the top 10, don’t worry, because guys like Chad Kelly, Jalen Hurd and Royce Freeman, among others will enter into the conversation in the fall.
