East Carolina has a bit of an inferiority complex when it comes to their place in North Carolina. They are not seen as on the same level as their fellow University of North Carolina system members, NC State and UNC. However, they take great pride in trying to bridge the gap whenever possible. The best way they have found is beating up on the ACC.
East Carolina has won their last six games against ACC opponents. They beat NC State in a thrilling 33-30 game in Greenville in the second week of the season. Two of their six wins in the streak have come against Virginia Tech. The Pirates won 35-28 last year at home and 28-21 the year prior in Blacksburg.
The Hokies are coming off a 49-0 shellacking of ACC-punching bag Boston College. The Pirates lost their first game of the year to South Carolina, 20-15.
This year’s matchup will be a matchup of strength versus strength. The Hokie defense is ranked first in the country in passing defense allowing just 80.3 yards per game and second in total defense, 204.7 yards per game. ECU and senior quarterback Philip Nelson are seventh in passing offense with 370 yards per game and boast the ninth best offense in football, 550.7 yards per game.
Despite their historical success, the betting public doesn’t have much faith in the Pirates ability to get the job done in the unfriendly confines of Lane Stadium. They have bet Virginia Tech up from a 7.5-point favorite to almost two touchdowns.
