Saturday’s contest will serve as the ACC opener for both the North Carolina Tar Heels and Pittsburgh Panthers. Here’s everything you need to know, including how to watch it online.

Sometimes a matchup is so obvious it is impossible to miss. This is one of those times. This game between ACC Coastal foes will come down to the Pittsburgh running game against the Carolina run defense.

UNC Defensive Coordinator Gene Chizik knows this better than anyone and was more than a little concerned earlier this week.

“I thought we were soft, and I thought it was a very disappointing performance all the way around,” said Chizik after Tuesday’s practice. “We’ve got to improve a lot this week, or this game could get ugly.”

If effort at practice wasn’t enough to have the Heels’ defensive leader worried, their performance this season against the run certainly is. North Carolina is giving up 226.7 rushing yards per game, 106th in FBS.

The Panthers come in averaging 239 rushing yards per game.  They are led by junior running back James Conner, who is back from beating cancer and has gained 281 yards on the ground and run for three scores. He also has 105 receiving yards and two more touchdowns.

If you are a Carolina fan there are things to feel good about. Pittsburgh has no real passing offense and their passing defense is actually worse than the Tar Heels’ run defense. The Panthers are ranked 124th in passing defense for giving up 330 yards per game. First-year starter Mitch Trubisky and his dynamic receiving core have averaged just under 300 yards thus far.

In the world of gambling, the line has had a slight uptick in the Tar Heels favor, now a full 7 points. The total of 67 says the bookies are predictably predicting a shootout with these two flawed defenses and potent offenses on the field.
