Former Michigan football star Jourdan Lewis is facing domestic assault charges and his Wolverine teammates are backing him.

You never want to hear about anyone facing charges and having their name dragged through the mud before the legal process plays out, but that’s exactly what’s happening with former Michigan football star Jourdan Lewis on Wednesday.

According to MLive‘s John Counts, Lewis is facing domestic assault charges following a disturbance at his residence in which his girlfriend called police Wednesday morning, claiming there was an assault that took place. However, once police arrived, they couldn’t determine which party was the aggressor.

Charges were authorized later on Wednesday and Lewis will be arraigned. There’s nothing concrete, in terms of evidence, out quite yet, but there are many already talking about this hurting his NFL draft stock.

Just hours after the news broke, Lewis took to Twitter, stating, “It’s sad that somebody would want to control you so bad they would ruin your life over it.” The tweet was later deleted.

Lewis’ former Michigan teammate Wilton Speight also took to Twitter to defend the All-American cornerback.

Whether this domestic assault charge has legs or not, everyone needs to let the process play out and stop making statements such as these. It’s nice to see teammates backing each other, but Speight should know better than to poke the bear.

It’s unfortunate that this has to happen, but the truth will eventually come out. Before this run-in with the law, Lewis has been known as a good guy and someone who his teammates love and look up to — clearly.

The former Michigan cornerback was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and an All-American. He’s considered an early-round draft pick, but if the charges don’t stick, don’t expect his stock to take much of a hit.
