West Virginia football quarterback Will Grier has tossed nine touchdown passes in two games. His start to the season has been nothing short of impressive.

Through two weeks, it’s always tough to tell who will emerge as serious Heisman contenders for the rest of the regular season. However, one name that has emerged as a serious contender for the 2018 Heisman Trophy out of the Big 12 is the senior quarterback of the West Virginia Mountaineers, Will Grier.

This former transfer of the Florida Gators took advantage of an easy opponent in the Bo Pelini-coached Youngstown State out of the FCS. Just one week after downing the Tennessee Volunteers out of the SEC at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, Grier put up a 52-spot on Youngstown State in WVU’s home opener.

In Week 1 against Tennessee, Grier posted 429 passing yards and five touchdowns. In Week 2, Grier posted 332 passing yards and four touchdowns with just one interception while completing 80 percent of his passes.

Moreover, the interception that Grier tossed in Week 2 was his first of the season. His lack of mistakes could prove huge for the Mountaineers once Big 12 play comes around. From here on out, the rest of the 2018 schedule for West Virginia comes against Power Five competition.

It should be pretty easy for Grier to reach 1,000 passing yards in the third game of the season for West Virginia. That Week 3 matchup for West Virginia does come against its toughest opponent of the season so far in star senior quarterback Ryan Finley and the NC State Wolfpack.

Through the first two weeks of the season, there seems to be three clear Heisman favorites emerging. Grier is one of the favorites along with sophomore Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and sophomore Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor.

The experience factor and the pure talent and production of the offense around him would have to make you think that Grier has the best outlook among those three candidates. Tagovailoa should be able to challenge him for most of the season, though.

The Week 3 showdown between Grier and Finley will be very telling as to how deserving he is of staying as a frontrunner in contention for the Heisman Trophy. Having the support of standouts like wide receivers Gary Jennings and David Sills V will help his cause moving forward.
