7. Miami Hurricanes

Miami is the perfect example of how greatness is a cycle; there may be a few years where you are and feel unstoppable. But then there are the years where you can’t get anything right.

The last time Miami was at the top was in 2001, with Larry Coker at the helm. He led the Hurricanes through a 25-game win streak, and claimed a national championship while he was at it. Some claim that the 2001 Hurricane team is the greatest in college football history. A few years later, however, the wheel of fortune had turned. The the only notable moment in Miami’s 2006 season was an ugly on-field brawl against Florida International. Despite his former greatness, Coker was fired.

The wheel turned again when Miami hired Randy Shannon, but unfortunately it only turned halfway back to the top. Shannon’s tenure was marked by profound mediocrity, his worst season ending with 5 wins and his best with 9. He was let go after four seasons.

Now it’s Al Golden’s turn to feel the heat from the hot seat. He’s been at Miami for five seasons already, one more than Shannon, but has only ushered in more mediocrity. Can he get the wheel to turn his direction, or will we soon see him crushed by it?
