5. How good can the Virginia Tech defense be?

This seems like a vague question and it really is honestly, but I do not think there is a limit on how good this unit can be. Bud Foster is a wizard of getting great results with personnel that doesn’t necessarily scream elite. That doesn’t apply this time however as Foster has a shutdown corner in Kendall Fuller and a big time pass rusher in Dadi Nicholas.

Additionally the defensive line for the Hokies, including Nicholas, has a chance to be scary good as they are all very quick, with size, and good hands to play with leverage that allows you to play run or pass. This unit to me has the potential to be among the best in the country, holding their ground in the run game, while also pushing the pocket in the passing game.

The defense can also play off each other. The secondary will cover longer so the defensive line will pick up more sacks. Conversely if the defensive line gets more pressure the defensive backs will get more chances at interceptions and will make their coverage job easier.

The linebackers may be the weakest part of the team, but Foster can figure out how to manage that situation. Either way I do not see any way this defense doesn’t be among the top teams in sacks, points allowed and turnovers forced in the ACC.

This summer game will give Foster a chance to experiment with people and see how creative he can’t get moving his people around. The odds are with him that he makes the right calls, pushes the right buttons and this defense is among the top ones in the country.
