Wide Receiver Jobs up for Grabs

James Quick moved into the slot this spring as a wide receiver and did not disappoint during the spring game after catching seven passes for 127 yards. But there is still not a true No. 1 option yet for the Cardinals at receiver.

Overall, all of the receivers looked pretty good on Friday, but that is more of an indictment against the young secondary Petrino is dealing with. The major issue right now is that Bonnafon, or whomever will start at quarterback, is who will be the safety net to bail him out when things get bad?

That’s going to be necessary when he does not have the protection he needs and has to get rid of the ball quickly.

Keith Towbridge showed himself as a relatively reliable safety net at tight end, but the guy who stepped up mostly in this role was JaQuay Savage. Savage is a 6’3″ target and had 80 receiving yards, including a 54-yard touchdowns reception.

He looks like he could step into the role, and don’t forget that he was highly recruited out of high school before transferring to Louisville and sitting out last year.

But if he’s not the guy, then Petrino could have a problem.
