Brian Kelly has been a successful college coach since his days at Grand Valley State. Prior to his FBS transition, Kelly made appearances in three straight Division II Championships, winning two straight before becoming the head coach of Central Michigan.
Kelly has been the head coach of Notre Dame for six seasons now, and so far, he only has one season with double-digit wins, 2012, when his Irish were defeated in the BCS National Championship game.
Kelly’s had success, sure, but how long will he continue to coach the Irish while only winning eight or nine games a year? Kelly was wildly successful at Grand Valley State and Cincinnati, but college football is all about what you have done lately. Kelly really hasn’t done much with the Irish, and because of this, he will need a big season in 2015.
Mike Brey’s been coaching the Fighting Irish since 2000, and has failed to make post-season play only once in his sixteen seasons as the coach of Notre Dame.
Up until this past season, Brey’s Irish have been consistently above-average. His teams make the post-season each year, it seems, but they never seem to go far in any tournament. This changed in March when his Irish made it all the way to the Elite Eight, where they lost a close game to Kentucky.
Year after year, Brey’s Irish gets it done, and with a bright future ahead of them in the ACC, Brey’s teams soon might get the respect they deserve.
