The four best bets as college football betting season kicks off this week.
Welcome back to college football everyone. Saturdays will be fun again for the next three-plus months and it starts this weekend with a loaded slate of non-conference games.
There’s also a lot of value in the early season college football lines. Here are my four best bets for Week 1 starting with two games on Thursday.
South Carolina vs North Carolina in Charlotte
When: Thursday at 6:00 ET
Consensus Line: South Carolina -2.5
The wrong team is the favorite in this game.
North Carolina is slightly better than South Carolina going into this season. Because the game is on a neutral field, the Tar Heels should giving points to the Gamecocks.
North Carolina has the better quarterback in Marquise Williams. He is a senior and a dual-threat quarterback that should have a big year in the offense that returns 10 starters. South Carolina will start sophomore Connor Mitch who is very inexperienced.
The defenses for both teams have questions marks but I think North Carolina made a huge upgrade by hiring former Auburn head coach Gene Chizik. The Tar Heels defense was pathetic last year. They gave up 70 points to East Carolina, which was part of a four-game stretch where they surrendered 50 points or more three times. I do think Chizik can solve some of the problems.
South Carolina had problems of their own on the defensive side of the ball. It started when they gave up over 500 passing yards to Kenny Hill of Texas A&M in a 52-28 loss in the season opener.
I do like North Carolina to go over their win total and South Carolina to go under, so this play is correlated to both recommendations. I think North Carolina wins but I’ll be happy to take the few points that the Tar Heels are getting.
Pick: North Carolina +2.5
