Western Kentucky at Vanderbilt

When: Thursday at 8:00 ET

Consensus Line: Western Kentucky -2

The only time a Conference USA team will be a road favorite against a SEC team is if Vanderbilt is involved in the game.

Vanderbilt is the worst team in the SEC and they probably have the weakest home field advantage.

Western Kentucky returns quarterback Brandon Doughty who threw for 4,830 yards and 49 touchdowns in 2014. The Hilltoppers showed their offensive muscle last year by scoring 44.4 points per game, which was sixth in the country. Their highlight of the season was spoiling Marshall’s perfect season in a 67-66 overtime win.

Vanderbilt had a huge drop off in Derek Mason’s first season in charge. The Commodores went 3-9, which included a 30-point loss to Temple on the first Thursday of the season last year. Vanderbilt hasn’t named a starting quarterback yet. Johnny McCrary and Wade Freebeck battled for the job in camp.

The line for this game has moved quite a bit. Vanderbilt was a field goal favorite for most of the summer but now Western Kentucky is the favorite. Despite the line move, I still would take the Hilltoppers.

The over/under for this game is 64 so oddsmakers are expecting points. I don’t see where that make points will come from for Vanderbilt but can see Doughty and Western Kentucky being able to move the football and make a statement.

Pick: Western Kentucky -2
