Northwestern Wildcats vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers
- Point Spread: Northwestern -6.5
Northwestern started the season with a huge win over Stanford that no one saw coming. Since then they have continued their winning ways, but this Saturday they will be tested again against a very good Minnesota team led by Jerry Kill. Since dropping a close one to TCU to start their year, the Golden Gophers are on a three game winning streak.
This will be a huge game for both programs with question marks surrounding both Big Ten schools. In fact, it will give us more of an idea about the conference in general. Neither Minnesota nor Northwestern have been associated as conference powers in the Big Ten. They both have had success by delivering complete team wins with an emphasis on both sides of the ball.
You won’t find any Heisman contenders from either team. It would also be hard to single out the best player from both. What you will find is great coaching and a collective group of guys with chips on their shoulders having not been recruited by the larger schools.
Although Northwestern is ranked 16th in the nation, it would be hard to call this an upset should Minnesota win. Going undefeated might be a stretch for each team, but both are believing they can get to the Big Ten Championship Game with a chance to reach the Rose Bowl. This is a game that can definitely come down to the last minute.
