A near unanimous pick to finish last in the SEC West by fans (outside of the Magnolia State) and analysts across the country, No. 20 Mississippi State is 6-2 overall and 2-2 in SEC play and the Bulldogs appear capable of pickup up a few more wins before the season of the season.
Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott has 2,048 passing yards and 14 touchdowns with one interception this season and the senior signal caller also leads the Bulldogs with 371 rushing yards and seven rushing TDs.
Though State has struggled to run the football consistently with its running backs (no MSU running back has more than 196 rushing yards or two touchdown runs this season) Prescott has plenty of weapons in the passing game, including De’Runnya Wilson (33 receptions, 524 yards, 6 TD) and Fred Ross (40 receptions, 433 yards, 1 TD).
On the other hand, Missouri is a disappointing 4-4 with a 1-4 in SEC play, having lost four of five including three in a row. Few expected the Tigers to make it to the SEC Championship Game for the third straight year, but even fewer expected it to be this bad.
Mizzou’s biggest problem this season is a horrific offense that has averaged 276.4 total yards per game this season and hasn’t scored a touchdown in more than a month. The Tigers have scored a measly 12 points in losses to Florida, Georgia and Vanderbilt since.
However, Thursday night kickoffs are tricky, especially on the road. Plus, Mizzou has one of the best defenses in the SEC, and ranks third nationally with an average of 12.5 points allowed per game this year, so there’s a chance. Mizzou has surrendered an average of 280.9 total yards per game this year, which ranks second SEC this year behind Alabama, and No. 6 nationally.
State should win, but don’t be surprised if Missouri linebacker Kentrell Brothers and the Tigers make it difficult.
