This time last week, we heard rumblings of a shakeup at the quarterback position for the Georgia Bulldogs, but didn’t expect it to play out as it did. In an effort to jumpstart a struggling offense against Florida, the Bulldogs turned to junior quarterback Faton Bauta to make his first career start.
The timing was peculiar to say the least, with the Bulldogs still in control of their own destiny in the SEC East. The execution was even worse, with Bauta tossing four interceptions and not using his mobility as projected. Despite all that, the Georgia coaching staff stuck with him all game instead of turning to Greyson Lambert (1,276 passing yards, 9 TD, 2 INT), who started each of the first seven games this season or Brice Ramsey.
Bauta finished 15-for-33 for 154 yards. Head coach Mark Richt has been quiet this week as to which QB he’ll start this weeks against Kentucky.
Speaking of Richt, what were once whispers among fans questioning his decision-making are growing into screams for his job – and there is reason to believe Richt’s 15-year tenure could be in jeopardy. Therefore, making the correct quarterback decision and getting back into the win column – and in impressive fashion – is imperative.
As for Kentucky, the Wildcats have now lost three games in a row, with each loss worse than the one before it culminating in a 52-21 drubbing at the hands of Tennessee at home last week. With the Wildcats’ last win coming Oct. 3 in overtime against Eastern Kentucky, UK is also struggling for answers.
Because the Wildcats are likely to be without star running back Boom Williams (563 rushing yards, 3 TD) due to injury, because they’ve struggled mightily on defense (29.1 points and 414.6 total yards allowed per game) and because Georgia needs it so much more (UK still has winnable games against Vanderbilt, Charlotte and Louisville on the schedule with the goal of bowl eligibility still possible), expect the Bulldogs to make a statement.
