The first game of the day on Cupcake Saturday is Florida’s non-conference matchup with Florida Atlantic at The Swamp. It’s a mismatch in every sense of the word as the SEC East champs host a 2-8 Conference USA opponent whose only victories came against Charlotte and FIU.

The two teams have posted similar numbers offensively this season. The Gators have scored an average of 28.1 points per game and have gained 370.9 total yards per contest to date. FAU has averaged 22.3 points and 378.7 yards.

However, the defenses are night-and-day. Florida has surrendered just 14.5 points and 280.0 total yards per contest, both of which rank in the top five nationally. The Owls have allowed 29.4 points and 428.4 total yards per contest – meaning quarterback Treon Harris (1,109 passing yards, 6 TD, 3 INT) and running back Kelvin Taylor (736 rushing yards, 12 TD) should have success early.

The Gators wrapped up their SEC slate with a 24-14 victory over South Carolina last week. Now, the Gators take a breather before playing in-state rival Florida State next weekend and (probably) Alabama in the SEC Championship Game the following Saturday. And those next two games could have an impact on this week’s contest with FAU.

If Florida looks past the Owls – and it would be hard not to – you can expect a slow start, especially since the game kicks off at noon local time. The 31-point spread is big, especially since the Gators have scored 31 points only three times this season – none of which have occurred over the last five weeks. Expect an easy win, but for the Gators to fail to cover.
