Walter Camp is known as “The Father of Football,” so it’d be silly to omit him from this list.
Camp played in one of the first college football games when Harvard played Yale in 1876. Initially, he planned on being a doctor but realized he liked sports better. Now, his name is on a trophy presented to the best player in college football.
Not only was Camp a coach, he was a player and sports writer too. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach. At Yale, Camp’s alma mater, he went 67-2, won three national championships, and four conference titles.
Although he died in 1925, Camp helped shape modern football today. He played an integral role in creating rules and helping advance the game.
