College Football Coaching Changes: Ranking the best hires
15. Toledo Rockets – Jason Candle replaces Matt Campbell
Losing Matt Campbell was a tough blow for the Toledo Rockets. He was young, bright and wildly successful during his time at Toledo, but his successor, Jason Candle, can fill his shoes with the Rockets because the two are awfully similar.
They both played for championship teams at Division III powerhouse Mount Union before cutting their teeth in the coaching profession at their alma maters. Candle replaced Campbell as the offensive coordinator at Mount Union in 2007 after Campbell left for the job at Bowling Green. Candle reunited with Campbell at Toledo in 2009 when he coached slot receivers and has served as the team’s offensive coordinator under Campbell since 2012.
The continuity should help for a seamless transition for Candle to continue to build on what Campbell did in his five years at Toledo. Campbell won 35 games in four years and I can see a similar win total for Candle as he begins his head coaching career.
