Sign o’ the Times – Missouri Tigers

Tell-Tale Lyric: You turn on the telly and every other story is tellin’ you somebody died
A sister killed her baby ’cause she couldn’t afford to feed it
And yet we’re sending people to the moon

The smash 1987 double-lp Sign o’ the Times gave us an unforgettable funk glimpse at society in its title track, and last season the Missouri Tigers gave us their view on some societal issues.

The Missouri football team protested some racially charged incidents on campus by threatening to sit out a game, and were supported by their former (now retired) coach Gary Pinkel. The protest brought the national spotlight to Columbia, Mo. and it was certainly a sign of the times on college campuses nationwide.

While protests on campus are not uncommon, for a major football program to join in and to do so by threatening not to play a game – potentially costing the school and athletic department millions of dollars and public relations fallout – was new and unprecedented.

The university president eventually stepped down and the game was played as scheduled, but the message was clear. Big time athletics has a voice in campus politics.
