Southern Mississippi was a down program over the last five years. Their return to prominence in Conference USA can be attributed to the rise of Nick Mullens. Mullens was named Conference USA Player of the Year in 2015 for his outright phenomenal play after USM competed in the C-USA Championship Game and the Heart of Dallas Bowl in which they gave the Washington Huskies all they wanted in a 44-31 loss.
Mullens has a quick release and is very good at making smart decisions with the ball. He is not afraid to go for the deep ball in the wide open USM offense. Mullens will return to an offense that loses two starters at wide receiver but have three starters returning on the offensive line.
Mullens will have a chance to make a statement in the opening game against the Kentucky Wildcats. While Kentucky is not a premier team in the SEC, they theoretically should beat a C-USA team. Mullens will be able to showcase his skills against a top conference opponent.
