6. Texas Longhorns (Record: 2-1)

The Texas Longhorns were hit with similar struggles against the California Golden Bears, that Texas Tech faced against ASU in Week 2. A late start, and jet lag contributed to the Longhorns’ issues, but Vance Bedford’s defense left a lot to the imagination, and mental errors contributed to the Horns’ shortcomings in Berkeley.

You wouldn’t know it based off the first half shootout statistics, but after quarterback Shane Buechele had to leave the game for a bit due to a chest injury, that narrowed the field for the Cal defense. But Tyrone Swoopes came in and not only dispatched the 18-Wheeler package, he was able to sling the football downfield, which the Cal secondary didn’t seem to be ready for.

Texas’ biggest weaknesses against Cal were penalties, and a defense that appeared to lose power way too fast, preventing what should have been a complete game.

While the bye is needed this week, I wouldn’t anticipate Charlie Strong taking his foot off the gas during practice, as Texas heads to Stillwater in two weeks.
