Average Home Attendance 2006-2015: 54,953 (94.8% of capacity)
Average Season Winning Percentage: .598
Seasons Under 90% Capacity: 1
Seasons Over 100% Capacity: 1
Texas Tech fans are the first on this list that can reasonably claim strong loyalty despite a relative lack of success compared to other teams featured. Since 2006 the Red Raiders have expanded capacity at Jones AT&T Stadium by nearly 15 percent to accommodate the rabid interest in Tech football. The past decade has coincided with one of the team’s best runs of success under Mike Leach before tapering off after 2009 under Tommy Tuberville and Kliff Kingsbury.
After winning a share of the Big 12 South title in 2008, attendance dropped off in 2009 as the Red Raiders fell back a bit in the standings and Leach began to take heat for his alleged mistreatment of receiver Adam James following a concussion. That same year the stadium was expanded by over 6,000 seats, which also helped to depress the figures as a percentage of capacity. Fans quickly began to fill the new capacity, though, and Texas Tech hasn’t dropped below 93 percent attendance since.
Another notable nugget of knowledge bolstering the top-30 status of Texas Tech fans is the fact that they have helped set attendance records at 10 of the 37 bowl games to which the team has been invited. Their traveling fans have been among the most consistently well-traveled in college football, and they can still boast being part of the biggest crowds in both Holiday Bowl and Cotton Bowl history.
