After the disappointment of falling to California last weekend, Texas took its first bye week and rested ahead of Big 12 play. The Longhorns offense looks better than it has in years, scoring nearly 45 points per game to rank 12th nationally in scoring average. The defense, though, is allowing nearly five touchdowns to rank outside the top 100 in scoring defense. The discrepancy will need to be sealed up before league play begins.

Charlie Strong’s team won’t have much time to catch its breath despite the bye, with an early game at Oklahoma State next Saturday. The Longhorns then turn around to play the Red River Shootout in Dallas. Like the other idle teams this week, Texas could shift up or down a place or two based on how much voters want to reward or punish other results, but in the end they’ll probably remain in the 21-25 range.
