Baylor sits alone atop the Big 12, for one weekend at least, by virtue of having already played two conference games. The Bears ran away with victory against Oklahoma State in a weather-delayed game, then barely survived a trap game in Ames against Iowa State. The rest of their schedule leaves little to inspire pollsters. Wins over FCS Northwestern State, SMU, and Rice are unlikely to inspire much movement up the Top 25.

But for the Bears what is important is the schedule that remains rather than the schedule they’ve already played. Kansas comes to Waco in Week 7, providing another easy conference win, before the real challenges begin. They have to play Texas, Oklahoma, and West Virginia on the road. And there’s still the grudge match against TCU on the schedule as well. Like in seasons past, Baylor has seriously backloaded its schedule in a way that will make it hard to climb too much higher up the polls over the next few weeks.
