Heading into Week 7, both the AP and Coaches polls have Boise State all the way up at 15 in their rankings. Long revered as the pinnacle of Group of Five success, the Broncos have benefitted from Houston’s misfortune to climb right back to the top. They dominated New Mexico on Friday night, pulling out to a 49-7 lead before pushing the brakes in the fourth quarter. Brett Rypien completed 75 percent of his passes for 391 yards and five touchdowns. All told, the Broncos outgained the Lobos despite having 12 fewer minutes of possession. And they were disciplined as well, committing just two penalties for 15 yards.

Bryan Harsin’s team now ranks in the top 20 in points allowed per game, and the offense has featured a top-20 passing game as well. Trips to Wyoming and Air Force and a home game against BYU are the toughest challenges remaining on Boise State’s schedule, opening the door for yet another undefeated season at the school. And while it is unlikely that the Broncos would garner any serious consideration for the College Football Playoff, it bears mentioning that their win over Washington State looks better and better with each passing Cougars victory in Pac-12 play. That could play a factor when it comes to the end of the year and selection time.
