Johnny Manziel took the SEC by storm in Texas A&M’s first year in the league. Manziel put up 4600 total yards from scrimmage against the 20th toughest schedule in football that season, throwing for 3400 yards and adding nearly 1200 on the ground. He ranked third nationally in passing efficiency and finished first in the country in total touchdowns. His signature moment came on the road in an Aggies upset of eventual national champion Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the only loss suffered by the Crimson Tide that year.
In the 2012 Heisman voting, Manziel outshone every offensive candidate in the running. Only Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o came within 300 points of Manziel in the voting, as he became the first redshirt freshman to win the Heisman honors. The electric freshman finished first in the voting in five of the six regions in becoming the first Texas A&M player to win the Heisman since John David Crow took home the award 55 years earlier.
