Group of Five: Week 12 Access Bowl Power Rankings
By Zach Bigalke
San Diego State needed the win in Laramie far less than Wyoming, yet they played for victory rather than overtime when they scored the potential game-tying touchdown in the final seconds. The two-point conversion attempt fell incomplete, and the Aztecs suffered their second loss of the season in the process. That left Wyoming in the driver’s seat in the MWC Mountain, and if the Cowboys win next weekend against New Mexico they will get a rematch with the Aztecs on the first weekend of December.
As a result the Pokes slot in ahead of the Aztecs by the narrowest of margins in this week’s Access Bowl Power Rankings. The school has a shot at its first 10-win season since Joe Tiller was patrolling the sidelines in Laramie, but it must win in Albuquerque to ensure that possibility. A two-loss SDSU would probably have a better chance at claiming the Access Bowl slot than a three-loss Wyoming team, but any Mountain West champion is still going to merit consideration.
