Clemson’s blueprint to upsetting Alabama: 3 Ways The Tigers Pull Off An Upset
2. The Tigers need to utilize all of their offensive weapons.
The success of the Clemson Tigers offense hasn’t all been due to the play of quarterback Deshaun Watson. Unlike last season, Watson has more offensive weapons, particularly in the passing game, that gives the Tigers some added confidence going into the National Championship game. They’ll need to utilize these weapons to make sure the offense is firing on all cylinders.
The Clemson Tigers average 503 yards per game on offense, which ranks 12th in the FBS. With receivers Mike Williams, Deon Cain, Artavis Scott and tight end Jordan Leggett on the field, they rank seventh in the FBS in receiving yards per game with 327.8.
Watson has completed 30 or more receptions to six different receivers on the Clemson roster this season. He will need to utilize all of his weapons on offense against a very good Alabama defense. The Crimson Tide allow just 248 yards per game, but they’ve yet to face an offense of this caliber.
Leggett has 39 catches for 641 receiving and seven receiving touchdowns. He scored the game-winning touchdown against the Seminoles this season. Cain has 630 receiving yards and nine receiving touchdowns. Scott has 608 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns.
If the Clemson Tigers pull off the upset in the National Championship, look for guys like Williams or Leggett to play a role. Williams had six catches for 96 receiving yards in the Fiesta Bowl.
