Washington State head coach Dennis Erickson got things on the right track for the Cougars in his second year. Washington State entered the game with a No. 19 ranking and a 7-3 record.

The snow wasn’t as memorable as in 1992, but snow affected the conditions of the game.

Before a sold-out crowd at Martin Stadium, the Cougars fell behind early because of multiple turnovers. By halftime, the team trailed 28-16.

The team had relied heavily on the offensive firepower of the Pac-10’s leading rusher Steve Broussard and quarterback Timm Rosenbach. However, Washington State’s defense had a second half that propelled the team to victory.

Washington State scored a field goal and a 1-yard rushing touchdown to cut the lead to 28-26 at the end of the third quarter.

The only points Washington State allowed in the second half came on a field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter, making it 31-26.

In the most memorable play of the game, defensive back Shawn Landrum blocked Washington’s punt attempt to give Washington State’s offense excellent field position. Timm Rosenbach managed a five-yard rushing touchdown on fourth down to give Washington State a 32-31 lead. The Washington State defense held Washington scoreless in the remaining last half of the fourth quarter for the win.
