Pac-12 Football: 10 best Apple Cup rivalry games of all time
4. 1995 (Washington 33, Washington State 30)
The mid-1990s landed the next three spots, as multiple back-and-forth games occurred during this time period in the series.
In 1995, Washington senior quarterback Damon Huard was outplayed by Washington State freshman phenom Ryan Leaf. Leaf completed 22 of 33 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns. Huard didn’t perform poorly, but Leaf didn’t look like a player making his start in the Apple Cup.
Washington running back Rashaan Shehee opened the second half with a pivotal 85-yard rushing touchdown. Shehee was almost stopped in the backfield but scampered around Washinton State defenders and raced down the Washington sideline for the touchdown.
Washington State ended the first half with a 14-6 lead. Shehee’s touchdown cut the lead to 14-12.
Washington State still maintained a 22-15 lead by the end of the third quarter.
In what is probably the most memorable play of the game, Damon Huard threw a 42-yard bomb into double coverage. Washington State defensive back was in position for an interception in the end zone but the slippery ball slipped through his hands and into the expectant hands of Dave Janoski for a touchdown. The ensuing two-point conversion gave Washington a 23-22 lead.
With a little more than a minute left in the game and the score tied 30-30, Washington kicker John Wales nailed a 21-yard field goal for the win.
