The Tigers are a hard team to read and the SEC West is not an easy road. Road games against defending national champion Clemson, LSU and Texas A&M all seem dangerous. And if they have serious aspirations to win a conference title, they’re going to have to beat Alabama in the Iron Bowl.

Auburn has an elite athlete at the most important position on the field, quarterback, but other than Stidham and maybe Pettway, the rest of the team doesn’t have the star power of Alabama. However, what they lack in big names they make up for in consistent, high level talent. Auburn is one of, if not the most complete team in the SEC. If anyone can upset the Crimson Tide, it’s these Tigers.

Prediction: 11-1

Auburn will blow through the average teams in the SEC West (Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Texas A&M) on a collision course for Alabama. It’s going to take them a few weeks to find offensive cohesion, but when they do they’ll be cutting through even the mighty SEC defenses with ease.

If there’s anything that gives me pause, it’s Stidham. For all the hype he’s received, he still hasn’t produced on a consistent high level in college or the SEC for that matter. The bar for competent quarterback play is low in the SEC, but to compete for a national title it takes more than a decent passer. That’s not to say he couldn’t pull it together, but there are still some reasons to doubt.

What could be more fun that an Iron Bowl featuring one combined loss between Alabama and Auburn? Malzahn’s luck that he stole to edge LSU in 2016 will come back to bite him at some point in 2017. That said, one early stumble won’t damn your season. Especially when you knock off Alabama in the finale.
