Clemson Football: The Battle for the Starting Quarterback Job
Hunter Johnson, the threat
True freshman quarterback Hunter Johnson has already made waves as a member of the Clemson Tigers 2017 recruiting class. While he’s listed as a dual-threat guy, Johnson is a pro-style quarterback out of Brownsburg, Indiana with a cannon for an arm.
Johnson threw for over 6,000 passing yards and 60 touchdowns in his high career. He did rush for 528 rushing yards and three touchdowns as a senior but his biggest strength is his arm and delivery.
Hunter Johnson is a five-star quarterback who ranked 30th overall, according to 247Sports, in this past year’s recruiting class. With multiple offers and tons of predictions, Johnson picked the Clemson football program as the place to start his collegiate career.
Since enrolling this past January, he’s done nothing but impress the Tigers coaching staff. With the amount of experience Johnson has, he looks the most prepared to undertake Clemson’s traditional spread offense.
He’ll have an opportunity to prove himself early, too. Although Bryant has been named starter for Kent State on September 2, we’re likely to see Johnson play as well. Johnson will get to show his ability to throw accurate passes downfield while also showcasing his athleticism.
He may be restricted to the pocket, but he can hurt when he scrambles.
