College Football Rankings 2017: Projected AP Top 25 after Week 1
By Zach Bigalke
No. 21 Virginia Tech met No. 22 West Virginia in a Sunday night showdown between AP Top 25 teams at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland. It was a tight battle that remained tied for much of the game, as the Hokies and Mountaineers traded scores back and forth. Justin Fuente‘s crew ultimately prevailed in a 31-24 victory thanks to 336 total yards from quarterback Josh Jackson.
Jackson threw for 235 yards and a score while adding another 101 yards and a rushing touchdown. The Hokies were gashed through the air by Will Grier and the West Virginia passing attack, and ultimately gave up nearly 600 total yards of offense in the win. While it was hardly a dominant display, the statement win will result in a bump a few spots up the Top 25 this week.
Virginia Tech probably won’t be tested again until ACC play begins on the final weekend of September. Non-conference games against FCS Delaware, East Carolina, and Old Dominion precede a showdown with top-five Clemson at the end of the month.
