SEC Football Power Rankings 2017: Week 4 Edition
Talk about a defensive battle. The game against Kansas State was an incredible win for Vanderbilt, and also proved that they might have the best defense in the SEC this season. Kansas State came in with an experienced and high scoring offense. The Commodores absolutely shut that down in this game. KSU quarterback Jesse Ertz only had 76 yards passing and two interceptions. That is a great effort by the secondary. The run game was more effective for KSU, which was surprising but hey, they’re a good team.
Vanderbilt looks like a solid team overall. Obviously the defense is great. While the offense didn’t score tons of points against KSU, they did what they had to. Quarterback Kyle Shurmur once again showed poise in the pocket and made very few mistakes. Shurmur had both a touchdown in the air and on the ground. He managed the game well and once again proved his improvement from last season. It looks like Vanderbilt could make some noise in the SEC East. The Commodores face a monumental test this week against Alabama in Nashville.
LSU was trounced. That is all.
But seriously, the Tigers had nothing going for them in this game. Penalties cost them early when Danny Etling had a beautiful touchdown called back. The youth of the team seemed to show and injuries mounted for their defensive line throughout the night. I know LSU can be streaky on offense, but I certainly expected more from them. And I certainly expected more from the Tiger defense, which may as well not have shown up last night. They looked as if they had no clue how to defend Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald.
Going forward LSU has to get more consistent on offense and the defense has to get back to getting consistent pressure.
