Big Ten Football: Power Ranking every Big Ten coach
9. Kirk Ferentz, Iowa
- 2016 record: 8-5 (6-3)
- 2017 record: 8-5 (4-5)
- 2018 B1G recruiting class rank: 7 of 14
The Iowa Hawkeyes do have one Big Ten West crown under head coach Kirk Ferentz, but other than that the program has been slightly above average in recent history. While the team is good for one or two big wins a year, the Hawkeyes were supposed to be the Wisconsin Badgers’ biggest threat in the West over the last couple seasons, but have fallen short of expectations two seasons in a row now.
A positive sign for Ferentz and company is their recruiting class is slowly improving. The team was in the bottom three of the league for their 2018 class to begin the 2017 season, but have now moved up to seventh- which is impressive given the elite level the Big Ten boasts.
Iowa holds a huge opportunity next season as the three West division frontrunners Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Nebraska all visit Kinnick Stadium.
Ferentz may very well be one of the best in-game coaches in the Big Ten has built quite the program since taking over the team in 1998. Yet, the Hawkeyes have not won the Big Ten since 2004 and hold just a .596 winning percentage during his time with the program.
There is no way of knowing how short or long Ferentz’s leash is with the athletic department, but apparently they do not mind the results they have been seeing for quite some time now.
