Wimbush is the anticipated starting quarterback for the Irish in 2018. However, rising junior quarterback Ian Book will challenge Wimbush for the starting gig. To think that Kelly will only include Wimbush and Book in that competition is silly.

Four-star dual-threat quarterback, from Gibsonia, PA, Phil Jurkovec offers a different skill set than both Wimbush and Book. Wimbush is a great runner, and forces defenses to prepare for him to beat them in multiple ways. Meanwhile, Book has a strong arm and is sneaky elusive inside the pocket.

But, Jurkovec is a good combination of both styles, and he also has the size required to succeed in any pass-happy offense. The departure of star running back Josh Adams will put more of an emphasis on the passing game for the Irish.

It’s not likely that Kelly will entrust the entire offense to Jurkovec in Week 1. But, he’ll keep the option open to give Jurkovec his chance in the spotlight. Especially considering Notre Dame’s potential in 2018, Jurkovec will get the opportunity to shine in garbage time at some point.
