2018 NFL Mock Draft: Projecting every first round selection
The New York Jets weren’t supposed to be competitive in 2017. Riding the surprisingly potent arm of Josh McCown the Jets got to 5-8, a much more respectable mark than anyone had thought they would have been able to achieve in the preseason. Them McCown went down with a hand injury and Bryce Petty was called upon to start the final three games of the season. He went 0-3.
Petty is now 1-6 as a started with four touchdowns and 10 interceptions spanning two NFL seasons. The Baylor product is 26-years old and hasn’t done anything notable that would suggest he has franchise quarterback potential. McCown is on the other end of the spectrum. A 16-year NFL veteran, the 38-year old passer is not the long-term solution in New York.
With a top-10 pick and plenty of quarterbacks to choose from, the New York Jets will opt for draft-darling Josh Allen out of Wyoming. Allen threw for 16 touchdowns and six interceptions, that’s not all that special, but scouts are more in love with upside of Allen than his current level of raw talent.
One AFC South official summed Allen up like this:
"Coaches are going to see this guy and imagine everything he can be, and they’re going to be all over their front offices to take him. He’s just really raw, so you have to make sure he goes to a place where the coaching is solid and knows what he needs. The talent is all there"
Allen is a risk, especially this high in the draft, but the Jets have been known to roll the dice before.
