College Football: Building a super team position by position
As much as the Big 12 is known for its offense, the Big Ten has carved out equal recognition for their defense. When it comes to fielding an elite front seven, few have done better than the Michigan Wolverines.
Michigan saw both of their starting defensive ends, Taco Charlton and Chris Wormley, drafted in the first 75 picks of the 2017 NFL Draft. Chase Winovich continued that tradition of excellence. As a senior he led the Wolverines with 8.5 sacks and 19 tackles for a loss.
As good as Winovich was, he might not have been the best pass rusher on his own team. Blue chip recruit Rashan Gary followed up a strong freshman season with an even stronger sophomore campaign. He racked up 58 tackles (11.5 for a loss) and 5.5 sacks for the Wolverines last season, and will be the focal point of the defensive front again next season.
Past or present, the iconic maize and blue helmet of the Wolverines has become synonymous with defensive excellence. When it comes to winning the battle up front, Michigan always has somebody that can make a difference.
