For teams like Rutgers and the Maryland Terrapins, it can be an uphill battle to thrive in the Big 10. Maryland football hoped that former head coach D.J. Durkin was just the guy to make this program respectable in the Big Ten. Yet, the results over the offseason with Durkin wound up dragging this program and school through the mud more than anything else.

Maryland had a tragic off-season that included the passing of offensive lineman Jordan McNair during summer workouts. Through all of that, the Maryland board of regents thought it wise to make the recommendation that Durkin stay as the head coach. Some national backlash quickly disproved that decision and a brighter future might be restored for the Terps soon.

Before making the transition to the Big Ten, Maryland had some good seasons in the ACC and even kept pace with the historic basketball program at times. Since joining the Big Ten, the results on the field aren’t as good with a bowl game even ending up as a big accomplishment. The 2018 season could deliver a bowl game, but that doesn’t matter much after all the turmoil.

This athletic department does have a large and wide-ranging alumni base that could support a growing football program. For some reason this athletic program cannot seem to find the right head coach to get something going. The immediate future for Maryland doesn’t look much better than the recent past.
