The pure amount of unfortunate events for the Iowa State Cyclones within the past decade, combined with a long period of mediocrity, made it very difficult for one of the nation’s most underrated fan bases to be happy with the state of the program. That can ware on any fan base, let alone on this loyal.
Iowa State is now turning it around under a rising star at head coach in Matt Campbell. And, Campbell recently signed a contract extension to stay with this program and build something special in Ames, Iowa. Yet, Iowa State still hasn’t fully shaken off the stigma of Big 12 regular season disappointment.
Jack Trice Stadium is quickly turning into a top place for upsets of top 25 teams in the country with Campbell now at the helm. It’s a death sentence for teams to travel to Ames to face Iowa State. Just look at what happened to top 10 teams in the Oklahoma Sooners, West Virginia Mountaineers, and the TCU Horned Frogs in the past two seasons.
Iowa State could even build up to be a firm player in the Big 12 Title picture in the next two or three years. The team is clearly knocking on the door right now and could even make an appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game in 2018 with some chaos transpiring at the top of the conference standings.
